College sports in the United States rarely sit still for long. On 1 August 2026, a federal judge in Colorado issued a ruling that has created another significant moment of change, this time for athletes from the high school Class of 2022.
Judge Charlotte Sweeney of the U.S. District Court of Colorado granted a class-wide preliminary injunction requiring the NCAA to grant an additional year of eligibility to athletes who graduated high school in 2022, competed in NCAA Division I sports from the 2022-2023 season, and completed their standard four years of eligibility at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season.
In plain terms: athletes who believed their college careers had ended this past spring may now be eligible to compete for a fifth season.
To understand the ruling, it helps to understand the context around it.
Athletes who started college before the Class of 2022 received an extra year of eligibility due to the disruption caused by COVID-19. More recently, the NCAA introduced a new age-based eligibility model, known as the five-for-five rule, which gives athletes incoming from the 2026-27 academic year onward five years of eligibility across a five-year span.
The Class of 2022 sat directly between those two groups. They did not receive a COVID year. They will not benefit from the new five-for-five rule. Athletes from that class filed suit arguing they were unfairly excluded, and Judge Sweeney agreed, ruling that they are entitled to a fifth year on par with both the classes before and after them.
This is an important distinction. What has been issued is a preliminary injunction, which means the extra eligibility year is currently available to affected athletes, but the matter is not settled.
The NCAA has called the ruling "egregiously wrong" and has stated its intention to appeal on an expedited basis. That means this situation could change. Families and athletes affected by this ruling should not make significant decisions based solely on it without understanding that it remains subject to legal challenge.

The more immediate practical effect is on college rosters. That said, colleges recruit new athletes every year regardless. Rosters turn over, coaches plan ahead, and demand for quality international athletes continues.
