What Golfers and Parents Really Need to Know About U.S. College Recruitment

With PGA Coach Brent Dale and Platform Sports' Will Clarkson

There’s a difference between going to college to play golf and going to the right college to grow your game and yourself.

That was the heart of a powerful conversation between PGA professional Brent Dale and Platform Sports' Will Clarkson during our latest webinar, where they unpacked what the U.S. college system really looks like for aspiring golfers—and the decisions that can make or break the experience.

Brent’s Story: From Tin Sheds to Life Lessons

Brent shared his own experience heading over to a top-ranked junior college in the U.S. at 18. What was promised in emails didn’t quite match reality—he landed to find a dorm that was essentially a tin shed. But that curveball turned into a learning curve. And it sparked a lifelong passion: helping young golfers avoid those missteps.

As a long-time coach and now Head Pro at Liverpool Golf Club in Sydney, Brent’s drive is simple: guide athletes toward the best experience for them—not just the flashiest option.

“Getting a spot at a university isn’t the end goal. It’s getting to a program where you’ll actually get to play.”
— Brent Dale

Why Fit Beats Flash

Together, Brent and Will dug into what really matters when choosing a program. Yes, facilities, rankings, and team prestige are important—but none of it matters if you're benched week after week.

They broke down the reality of roster spots (only 5–6 players travel to tournaments), the importance of strength and conditioning, and how personality and attitude can determine whether a coach even looks your way.

“A lot of coaches want to see how you handle a bad shot. Snapping clubs? You’re off their list.”
— Brent Dale

The Academic Trap Too Many Miss

For many Aussie and Kiwi golfers, the academics can be the biggest roadblock. Brent recalled students who were pulled off the tee after flying across the world because they weren’t eligible to compete.

Will outlined exactly what’s required—16 core subjects, GPA thresholds, and why SATs still matter—and shared how academic performance can unlock major scholarships.

“Two golfers. Same scores. One’s got a 3.5 GPA, the other a 2.4. The 3.5 gets the scholarship, every time.”
— Will Clarkson

What to Start Doing Now

From high school subject choices to mental preparation and time management, the pair offered tangible advice for golfers and parents who want to stay ahead of the curve. They also highlighted the importance of strength training, structured schedules, and being ready for the intensity of the U.S. system.

And they didn’t sugarcoat it—going to college in the U.S. is a big step. But with the right guidance, it can be one of the most rewarding.
