Rene Wasi has accepted a soccer scholarship to attend Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in California.
Rene Wasi and her family are originally from Papua New Guinea, a country located in the south pacific. Rene’s father Maurie Wasi competed for the Papua New Guinea national soccer team. In 2005 Maurie earned an opportunity to play for a club in New Zealand, and as a result, relocated his family to Auckland.
Coming to New Zealand for the Wasi family did surface challenges. Maurie and his family had to work hard at building relationships and adapting to the new environment they were in. Earning respect from people within the community had to be established, and being from a country which not many people had knowledge about made it hard for the family.
Following in her father’s footsteps Rene wants to compete professionally for New Zealand, and she is definitely on track. Rene has been selected to represent New Zealand Under 20 national team and to take part in the Future Ferns Development Program.
We met Rene in July 2020 through former All White Chris Zoricich. After listening to what the Wasi family are looking for in a college, we got to work right away. We networked with some amazing college programs which are extremely competitive to get into. Rene spoke to a number of college coaches. Once she spoke to the team at LMU she had found the right fit.
Rene and her family found LMU to be the best place for her to further her soccer development and to start her tertiary education. LMU is located in the heart of Los Angeles, a short drive away from LAX airport and a stone throw away from Santa Monica Pier. Jenny Bindon is the head women’s soccer coach and brings an amazing amount of experience to the table. Jenny has played over seventy games for the New Zealand Ferns and also was the former assistant coach at UCLA. The facilities at LMU are incredible and all the athletes in the women’s soccer team want to become professionals. By being in Los Angeles, Rene will not only be competing with colleges in her conference but high-level teams nearby such as UCLA, Southern California, and many more.
